The Best English Composition Hack: Use Theme-Based Vocabulary

Many parents believe that scoring well for language in composition is about using good phrases.

But the real secret is this:

It is not about using random good phrases. It is about using the right phrases for the right theme.

This is what we call theme-based vocabulary.

The Best English Composition Hack: Use Theme-Based Vocabulary

Why Theme-Based Vocabulary Works

Before learning phrases, students must first understand what school compositions and PSLE compositions are actually testing.

Most school compositions follow recurring moral themes.

Common themes include:

  • Responsibility

  • Kindness

  • Honesty

  • Exploring new experiences

  • Making a difficult decision

  • Standing up for what is right

  • Learning a lesson

  • Overcoming difficulty

  • Perseverance

  • Learning a new habit

  • Changing for the better

  • Motivation

And many more.

What schools and PSLE markers are looking for

Most school compositions are moralistic stories.

This means the story usually shows:

  1. A clear beginning, middle, and end

  2. A problem or situation

  3. The character learning a lesson related to the theme

They are not testing fantasy creativity.

Stories about aliens, witches, magical kingdoms, or superheroes are rarely rewarded in exams.

Instead, examiners look for realistic situations where a child learns a meaningful lesson.

Because of this, many themes appear again and again in school exams and PSLE.

Once students understand this pattern, preparing for composition becomes much easier.

The Key Insight

Once you can identify the theme, it becomes much easier to know which vocabulary phrases to use.

This is why theme-based vocabulary is so powerful.

When students prepare vocabulary by theme, they naturally use the right phrases in the right context.

In fact, language is often the easiest component to improve, and many students can even score close to full marks for language when they use strong phrases correctly.

Content and storytelling are more complex skills that require story structure and plot devices, which we will cover in another article.

Today, the focus is simply this:

👉 Learn vocabulary by theme.

Examples of Theme-Based Vocabulary

Below are some examples to help you understand how theme-based vocabulary works.

Theme: Burglary / Crime

Useful phrases:

  • Sent behind bars

  • Brandished a knife

  • Loitered around suspiciously

  • Alerted the police

  • Picked the lock

  • Emptied the safe

These phrases immediately signal to the examiner that the student understands the crime scenario.

Theme: Cheating

Useful phrases:

  • Took furtive glances

  • Circled like a hawk

  • Caught red-handed

  • Took surreptitious looks

  • Had to face the music

  • Given a dressing down

  • Promised to turn over a new leaf

  • It was a bitter pill to swallow

  • Once bitten, twice shy

These phrases help students clearly describe guilt, consequences, and learning a lesson.

Theme: Fire / Emergency

Useful phrases:

  • Smoke billowed out of the building

  • A wall of thick smoke blocked my vision

  • Firefighters arrived in the nick of time

  • Doused the raging flames with their jets

  • Extinguished the fire

  • Screamed at the top of my lungs

  • Crimson flames licked the ceiling

  • Evacuated the building safely

These phrases create vivid descriptions that impress examiners.

How Parents and Students Can Use This Strategy

If you are preparing your child for PSLE or primary school composition exams, you can follow this simple method.

Step 1

Identify common composition themes from:

  • School exam papers

  • Past PSLE questions

  • Assessment books

Step 2

Collect phrases and vocabulary commonly used for those themes.

Step 3

Create a theme-based vocabulary bank.

Step 4

During practice compositions, place the phrase list in front of the child and encourage them to use these phrases in their writing.

With repeated practice, students naturally start incorporating these phrases.

Very quickly, you may notice a significant improvement in the language component of their composition marks.

One Final Reminder

Even with strong vocabulary, students must still ensure that:

  • Spelling is accurate

  • Grammar is correct

  • Punctuation is properly used

Once the basics are solid, adding strong theme-based phrases can significantly improve language scores.
