What is the difference between discursive and discussion-based essay?

Discursive essays offer a balanced discussion of a topic. The author educates the reader by presenting all sides to an argument. The author avoids arguing for one viewpoint and keeps their personal opinion out of the discussion. The aim is to provide a balanced discussion by examining the issue from various perspectives.

Discussion essays explore multiple perspectives of a topic in a balanced way with optional mention of your opinion. The question sets usually has the word 'Discuss' in them.

“Do we even need newspapers?” or “Why do we still have newspapers?” These are some of the few common questions people have about whether newspapers have any relevance in today’s world. While some might say that digital newspapers are better, others still attest to the fact that digital newspapers lack a lot of benefits that original newspapers have. In this essay, we would discuss the relevance of newspapers in today’s world and the ups and downs of their usage.

Firstly, let us talk about how newspapers are still relevant in today’s world. Newspapers are commonly known and praised for being reliable sources of information. As newspapers are commonly and often owned by the government, they can provide more thoroughly researched news that would not be fake as opposed to the digital media where information may not be true and can be altered in a blink of an eye with just a click of the finger. Such examples are the newspaper companies like “The Straits Times” and “Lian He Zao Bao” which are owned by the government. These newspapers generally invoke a sense of reliability among people and the trust that it would not contain any fake information. Therefore, newspapers are more reliable and better than those digital newspapers.

Secondly, the newspaper is very accessible. Although digital newspapers are right on your phone, people living in rural and remote areas may not have the convenience and access to the internet, therefore cutting them out from digital newspapers. For instance, there are an estimated 38% of the world’s population that still does not have access to the internet. This is because they could not afford it or could not access it, therefore, the only way for them to gain information and news is through the newspaper, making it very accessible to those who lack the ability to connect to the Internet. In conclusion, newspapers are more accessible to those who have no access to the internet.

However, although newspapers may seem like a good way to gain information about what is happening around the world, digital newspapers still have many uses and benefits that original newspapers lack. One such example is how it is very convenient and efficient. With a simple click of a finger, mountains of information can be found within milliseconds. Plus, it can be used through devices like your phone, making it very portable and convenient, unlike newspapers that are big and bulky. For example, unlike digital newspapers, traditional newspapers take up lots of space, resulting in it being a hassle to carry around wherever you go. Whereas digital newspapers, which can be found right in your phone, can be carried around in your pocket and yet contain more information than the traditional newspaper, therefore making digital newspapers very convenient and portable as well as an efficient way of gaining information.

Last but not least, digital newspapers can provide news and information at the very moment whilst traditional newspapers are unable to. This can be seen from how information like breaking news can be read the moment it happens. This also allows information to be quickly updated in real time, therefore proving how digital newspapers can deliver news faster than newspapers.

In conclusion, newspapers are still of relevance in today’s world, while it is a very reliable source of information and can be very accessible to those without an internet connection. However, they still take up space and provide news slower than the digital way. Hence, in my opinion, traditional newspapers as well as digital newspapers should still be used in today’s world to have the best of both worlds in gathering information both efficiently and reliably.
