2. Programme Structure

Our Secondary programme follows a fixed 3-week rotation to ensure students receive balanced exposure to every component tested at O-Levels.

🟢 Week 1 — Essay Writing

Students focus on one major essay format each cycle, such as argumentative, discursive, expository or narrative writing.

Lessons cover structure, planning, vocabulary, content development and detailed feedback.

Compositions are guided and heavily scaffolded to help students gradually build confidence, clarity and strong writing foundations.

🟡 Week 2 — Situational Writing

Students learn the required formats, tone, task fulfilment and writing techniques needed for different situational writing tasks.

Lessons are heavily guided and scaffolded to help students gradually understand the requirements of various formats such as formal and informal letters, emails, articles, speeches and reports.

🔴 Week 3 — Mock Exam Practice

Students complete:

• Editing
• Essay Writing
• Situational Writing

under timed exam conditions to build stamina, accuracy, and exam readiness.

🔁 The cycle then repeats continuously throughout the programme, allowing students to strengthen all core formats consistently over time.

The aim of the programme is not only to expose students to every tested format, but also to help them build confidence, speed, structure, and critical thinking progressively through repeated practice and detailed rewrites.

Parent Progress Reports (Every 8–10 Weeks)

Every 8 to 10 weeks, parents receive a structured progress report that includes their child’s essay, situational writing and mock exam scores.

The report provides a clear breakdown of which essay formats — such as argumentative, discursive or expository essays — and which situational writing formats — such as articles, speeches or reports — may still require more practice.

With regular O-Level style mock exam testing, parents and students are also able to gauge how the student is likely to perform under actual exam conditions and identify weaker components early.

3. Two-Stage Rewrite & Feedback System

Improvement happens through targeted rewrites. Rewrites are compulsory for all enrolled students.

Stage 1 — Draft Marking

Teachers focus on:

  • content strength

  • grammar accuracy

  • clarity of ideas

  • paragraph logic

  • A mark is assigned

Stage 2 — Handwritten Rewrite

Students proceed to Rewrite 1. Markers add enhanced feedback to show students how to attain higher marks:

24 → 26 / 30 (Essay / Situational Writing)

Some students even proceed on to Rewrite 2 or even 3. Each rewrite is marked with more layered feedback. The scripts are analysed by 2 teachers/markers for non-biased feedback. This system creates predictable, consistent score jumps across the year.

4. Exclusive Interactive Assessment Books

Our Secondary English assessment books are primarily focused on Editing Techniques, as editing is a tested component in the O-Level English Paper 1 examination.

Students receive ample editing practice through our in-house digital and interactive assessment books, which come with auto-marking features to make practice fast, engaging and effective.

These practices help students strengthen grammar accuracy, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling and language precision progressively over time.

⭐ FAQ: Secondary Composition / Essay Writing Classes Singapore

1. How is your syllabus like? Will my child be suitable?

Our classes are designed to prepare students for O-Level writing formats as early as Secondary 1. Students are progressively exposed to major O-Level essay and situational writing requirements over time.

As our syllabus closely follows O-Level standards, the programme may be considered advanced for some Secondary 1 or Secondary 2 students. However, we strongly believe in preparing students early so they have sufficient time to build confidence, structure, critical thinking and exam readiness gradually.

The programme is most suitable for students who will eventually be sitting for the O-Level English examination and are prepared for a structured and rigorous writing programme.

2. Are online writing classes as effective as in-person lessons?

Yes — online lessons are highly effective with annotation tools, screen sharing, live corrections and interactive e-books.
Physical classes offer hands-on story analysis using real examples from fiction.
Both formats deliver excellent results, just through different methods.

3. How often should my child write?

Once a week consistently.

Every lesson, students complete a full writing piece, whether it is an essay or situational writing task. Every 3rd week, students undergo an O-Level style mock test consisting of editing, essay writing and situational writing under timed exam conditions.

Rewrites are compulsory and form a key part of our programme. Through repeated correction, detailed feedback and targeted rewrites, students gradually strengthen their structure, argument development, language precision and task fulfilment — all of which are essential for attaining higher bands such as 27/30 and above.

Consistent writing practice is extremely important at Secondary level, as students must gradually master many different O-Level essay and situational writing formats over time.

4. How can my child improve composition scores?

Through structured planning, vocabulary building, targeted rewrites, and completing our in-house assessment books.

5. How long does improvement usually take?

  • 8–12 weeks for clearer, more organised writing

  • 3–6 months for significant score jumps

⭐ 6. Why does feedback change from Rewrite 1 onward, and why do teachers add new suggestions? Why can’t everything be stated in Rewrite 1?

This is a very common question from parents — and the answer is simple:

Rewrite 1 focuses on foundational correction.

The first marking is meant to:
• correct grammar and language errors
• improve clarity and paragraph organisation
• strengthen argument development or content elaboration
• ensure task fulfilment and correct tone
• ensure the essay or situational writing piece meets O-Level requirements

This stage fixes the baseline issues first.

⭐ However, Rewrite 1 cannot show every possible improvement at once.

This is not because teachers “cannot make up their minds”, but because too much feedback at one time overwhelms students.

If every enhancement point was given immediately, many students would struggle to process and apply the feedback effectively. Students need to improve progressively and systematically.

⭐ Enhancements also depend on the student’s Rewrite 1 corrections.

Teachers need to first assess:
• how the student restructured the essay
• whether arguments became clearer
• whether elaboration improved
• whether examples became more relevant
• whether tone and task fulfilment were corrected properly
• whether the situational writing format now works effectively

Rewrite 2 and beyond are therefore based on the student’s updated work, not the original draft.

This is not inconsistency — it is responsive and layered teaching.

⭐ Rewrites develop critical thinking and higher-level writing skills.

With each rewrite, students learn how to:
• strengthen arguments and elaboration
• improve explanation depth
• refine vocabulary and sentence precision
• improve paragraph flow and coherence
• make better writing decisions independently
• understand how small changes affect the overall effectiveness of the essay

These are the exact skills required for higher O-Level bands, where students must demonstrate mature thinking, strong development, clarity and effective communication.

⭐ Rewrites also help students develop a more confident and sophisticated writing style.

Through repeated correction and refinement, students gradually learn how to:
• write with greater clarity and control
• develop stronger examples and analysis
• improve tone and audience awareness
• write more fluently under exam conditions

⭐ In short:

Rewrite 1 fixes foundational weaknesses.
Rewrite 2 and beyond develop maturity, precision and higher-level writing skills.

This layered rewrite system is one of the key reasons why students progressively improve towards higher O-Level essay bands such as 24–27/30 and above.

7. What must my child do to stay enrolled and progress to future terms?

  • Complete at least 75% of Rewrite 1s

  • Complete one assessment book per term

8. Are your classes monthly or termly?

We require new students to commit to at least 20 lessons at the beginning. This gives students ample time to be exposed to the various O-Level essay and situational writing formats covered in our programme.

Over the 20 lessons, students will also complete multiple O-Level style mock tests, allowing parents and students to observe progress more accurately and assess whether the programme is helping the student improve over time.

Sylvia Lim & Zachary
"
My son, Zachary, first joined The Write Tribe in Primary 6 and did well enough for PSLE that we decided to continue with the programme again in Secondary 1. What I appreciate most is the consistent rewrite system. The teachers do not simply mark the essays and move on. Students are required to review their mistakes, improve their work, and resubmit, which helps them learn from their errors and gradually become better writers. The lessons are structured and comprehensive, covering all the essay types like argumentative, discursive etc. There's also an O'level Mock Exam every three weeks, which I feel is good because you have some results to work with and understand where your child's level is. Zachary's weighted assessment results have shown good improvement since joining.  Mostly, he enjoy the lessons and that's the most important!"

Cheryl & Zoey
"Zoey has been with The Write Tribe for a while. What we love the most are the essay writing cheatsheets. The study materials are straightforward, practical and easy to refer to. All major formats are covered, and there is plenty of practice. Rewrites and corrections are also heavily emphasised, to the point that the admin chases you for them 😂. I actually like the strictness because, as busy parents, we often forget things as there are so many tuitions to keep track of.So it is good that the school is strict and truly cares about the students."

For online trial lessons, kindly fill up the form provided, and we will contact you shortly if there is availability. Do take note that typing is required. Laptop or computer is preferred to an iPad as it helps the teacher fix the student’s errors. If classes are full and if your child scores average and above, you may like to consider our ad-hoc programmes. We do not extend enrolment to everyone and Only TRIAL students who complete rewrites would be considered for enrolment.
