A Mischievous Act - Model Composition - P4 to P6

“I bet you wouldn’t dare,” Jai smirked, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he kicked a pebble down the dusty trail.

Jai was my best friend, but he was nothing short of a walking dare. With sun-bleached hair, a cheeky grin, and a scar on his eyebrow from a bicycle stunt gone wrong, he was the very definition of reckless. I had always admired his fearlessness. While I hesitated, Jai leapt—sometimes quite literally—into danger without a second thought. That day, we were exploring the outskirts of our holiday camp when we stumbled upon a secluded lake, infamous for its eerie silence and tragic tales. Villagers whispered that it had “swallowed lives,” but to Jai, it was simply an invitation.

Still, something about the way the wind whistled through the trees gave me goosebumps. Little did I know, something terrible would unfold before my very eyes.

At first, everything was perfect. We reached the lake, its waters crystal clear and glittering like diamonds under the golden sun. “Race you in!” Jai yelled, and before I could stop him, he had plunged in with a wild whoop. His laughter echoed as he splashed around, and soon, I joined in, the cool water wrapping around me like silk. Giggling, we chased each other, believing that nothing—absolutely nothing—could go wrong.

However, what happened next shattered that illusion.

Out of nowhere, Jai’s laughter turned into a strange gurgle. He was flailing his arms, thrashing wildly in the water. At first, I rolled my eyes, thinking it was one of his silly pranks. “Very funny, Jai,” I called, treading water. But then I saw his face—twisted in panic, his lips pale and his eyes bulging.

My stomach dropped. His head bobbed under and didn’t come back up.

“Jai!” I screamed, my voice cracking. I swam frantically toward the spot where he had disappeared. My heart pounded. Was I about to watch my best friend die?

The lake, once beautiful, now felt sinister and endless. My throat tightened, and my limbs turned to jelly. I screamed at the top of my lungs, but we were deep in the forest—not a soul was around. I dived beneath the surface, eyes burning, but the water was murky. I surfaced, gasping. “Jai!” I sobbed. He was gone.

Tears streamed down my face as I floated there helplessly, certain that I had just lost him forever. Suddenly, I heard a rustle from the trees. A voice. Then—a splash.

A forest guard, tall and strong, had seen my frantic cries and plunged into the lake like a torpedo. He sliced through the water with powerful strokes and dived beneath. I held my breath, clinging to that single thread of hope.

Seconds passed. Then minutes. Nothing.

Had they both…?

Just as dread wrapped its icy fingers around me, the guard surfaced, gasping for airwith Jai in his arms.

I scrambled to shore as the guard dragged Jai up the muddy bank and immediately began mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. “Come on, boy. Come on!” he urged.

A few terrifying seconds later, Jai spluttered, his chest heaving as he gasped to life. Relief hit me like a tidal wave, and I collapsed beside him, shaking and sobbing.

Later, our parents were called. Jai was chastised severely and given a stern warning by both the authorities and his furious mother. We sat side by side, shivering under a blanket, promising never to disobey the rules again.

That day, we escaped by the skin of our teeth.

Jai and I looked at each other, still pale from the ordeal. “Never again,” he whispered.

“Never again,” I agreed.

We had learned our lesson the hard way. From that day on, we vowed to turn over a new leaf—and leave our mischievous days behind.
