Have you ever broken a promise before? Well, I have. Eight months ago, I broke a promise to my best friend, Heidi and almost lost her as a friend. This memory will be forever etched in the deep recesses of my mind.

To me, it was any other old watch. The strap of the watch was faded. The numbers were old fashioned and it looked rather outdated. But to my friend, it was priceless. “Promise me, you would take good care of it!” Heidi said without taking her eyes off the watch. I was only borrowing Heidi’s watch for a day but it was priceless to Heidi as it was the last memory of her grandmother.

Absentmindedly, I left the watch on the table. Without my knowledge, it slipped and what I heard next made me shudder. Crack! I turned to find a crack running across the face of the watch. My heart skipped a beat. What am I going to do? With trepidation, I trudged towards Heidi and passed the watched to her.

Upon seeing the watch, the smile on Heidi’s face faded. Instead, anger flooded her face and her blood boiled. Furrowing her eyebrows, she chastised me, “Look! You told me you would take care of the watch!” In my defense, I retorted, “It is not even that special! It is just a normal watch!” Angry words were exchanged. The tension in the air hung thick. Our friendship was in jeopardy. Soon, tears began to roll down Heidi’s cheeks like a raging waterfall. Her legs weakened and she collapsed onto one ground, wiping the tears welling up in her eyes. “It was the last thing I have from my grandmother!” She shrieked.

Immediately, regret washed over me and guilt blanketed me. I thought about it and realized now I had ignored her feelings. The next day, I apologized profusely for not regarding her feelings and hoped that she would forgive me. Luckily, Heidi also apologized for lashing out at me and we continued to be best friends after that. Ever since that incident, I vowed to myself to always honour my promises.
