I have a routine of going out cycling on every Saturday. I was expecting it to be yet another uneventful Saturday morning when I took my bicycle out. The cars and buses basked under the glory of the sun and hues of orange and purple dominated the skies. As usual, I will be going out cycling. At the house gate while I was wearing my socks, my mother reminded me, “Son, remember to put on your helmet and knee pads”, but it fell on deaf ears and as happy as a lark, I mounted on my bicycle, ready to have a pleasant ride. Little did I know something bad was going to happen.

My bicycle moved as fast as lightning while I was enjoying the breeze against my skin. After a few minutes of riding, something shocking happened. A dog was just trying to cross the road without spotting my bicycle coming. In the speed of lightning, I pressed the brakes of the bicycle. Paying all the attention on the dog, my hand, suddenly and automatically changed the direction of the bicycle and it hit a lamp post instead of the dog. My whole body flew out of the bicycle and unfortunately, my right knee hit the lamp post and I fell on the ground. My vision started to be blurry, and then everything went black.

I woke to the stench of disinfectant. Although my vision was blurry, I could see that my right knee was wrapped with a thick bandage. Just then, I realized that I was in a hospital. My vision got clearer and I saw my parents sitting at the side of my bed. Their eyes were the size of two golfballs and their bodies were shaking non-stop. My mother asked, “Son, why did you ignore the reminder I gave to you?” Regret washed over my face. I was reprimanded by the doctor for not wearing a helmet.

From that day onwards, I always wore a helmet and a pair of knee pads before going for a ride. I was regretful of my actions because I needed to stay at the hospital for one month. This memory will forever be etched in the deep recesses of my mind.
