How to Use Angry Phrases in Composition Writing

When writing about anger, students should try to show the character’s emotions through actions, facial expressions and body language instead of simply writing, “He was angry.”

For example, instead of:

“Tom was very angry.”

A student could write:

“Tom clenched his fists and gritted his teeth as he glared at me.”

These show not tell phrases for angry characters can also be adapted to suit different situations and levels of anger.

Using show not tell angry phrases can make a composition more vivid and help readers understand exactly how the character is feeling.

However, students should choose angry phrases that suit the situation. A character who is mildly annoyed should not suddenly behave as though he is furious. The description should match the intensity of the emotion and fit naturally into the story.

Students can also modify the angry phrases for composition in the table above rather than memorising every sentence word for word.

Frequently Asked Questions About Angry Phrases for Composition

What are good angry phrases for composition?

Good angry phrases describe a character's facial expressions, body language, actions and tone of voice. For example, a character might clench his fists, grit his teeth or glare at someone instead of simply saying that he is angry.

How do you show anger instead of telling in composition writing?

Use actions and physical reactions that allow the reader to recognise the emotion. Show not tell angry phrases can describe narrowed eyes, clenched fists, flushed cheeks, gritted teeth or a character's sharp tone of voice.

Should students memorise angry phrases for composition?

Students can learn useful phrases, but they should adapt them to fit the character and situation. The intensity of the description should match how angry the character actually is.
