Cheatsheet of Useful Phrases for P5/6 Composition - An escape
Did you know that upper-primary compositions often require students to show fear, urgency, suspense, and vivid imagery?
Using strong, expressive vocabulary can dramatically strengthen Content and Language marks — especially for P5/6 narratives.
To support your child in writing gripping, high-impact stories, here is a FREE Cheatsheet of Useful Phrases for P5/6 Composition - An escape — a common and important P5/6 theme in 2025.
Useful Phrases (High-Scoring & Student-Friendly!)
1. Bloodcurdling screams filled the air and for me, I was petrified that my hair stood on end.
2. Fire had spread itself throughout the whole building like locusts destroying everything in its path. Nothing was spared from the fiery cauldron of yellow flames.
3. A thick blanket of black pungent smoke hung ominously in the air. Sparks and flying splinters hit us. I could feel my own pulses and my heart palpitating as the orange clutches of fire wrapped its fiery fingers around the building.
4. He grinned, revealing a hideous toothy grin and a wave of rancid breath hit me.
5. Immaculately dressed, the man was clean-shaven, bespectacled, struggling with a pile of books. His hair was neatly combed and he was wearing a pleasant-smelling cologne. However, something about his unblinking steely gaze sent shivers down my spine.
6. I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out! My eyes widened, mouth fell agape and all colour drained from my face. Before I knew it, the car smashed straight into my bicycle. I flew a few metres before landing on the pavement. “Thud!” I realised that I was lying in a pool of blood, and blood was oozing from my knees. I noticed some cuts and bruises on my hands. My bicycle lay in a mangled mess beyond recognition. Reality hit me like a ton of bricks when I realised that I escaped by the skin of my teeth.
7. The sound of wailing sirens from the ambulance and police filled the air. All the rescuers sprang into action. The police cordoned off the area with yellow tape to prevent people from entering the accident scene. Paramedics rushed out of the ambulance with a stretcher. They assessed my injuries and secured me onto the stretcher with straps.
