Similes are comparisons that make writing more colourful and vivid. They usually use the words “as” or “like” to compare one thing to another. Here are ten good similes for composition writing your child can start using right away in their compositions — complete with meanings and examples.



1. As red as a beet


Meaning: Very red, often from embarrassment or heat.

Example: After forgetting her lines in the school play, Sarah’s cheeks turned as red as a beet.



2. As hungry as a wolf


Meaning: Extremely hungry.

Example: After the long hike, we were as hungry as a wolf and ate everything on the table.



3. As fast as lightning


Meaning: Very fast.

Example: The boy ran as fast as lightning to catch the ice cream truck.



4. As angry as a bull


Meaning: Very angry.

Example: He was as angry as a bull when he found out someone had scratched his new bicycle.



5. Like a bull in a china shop


Meaning: Clumsy and careless in a delicate situation.

Example: Tom rushed into the art gallery like a bull in a china shop, knocking over two displays.



6. As proud as a peacock


Meaning: Very proud.

Example: She was as proud as a peacock after winning the spelling bee.



7. As noisy as a zoo


Meaning: Very noisy and chaotic.

Example: The classroom was as noisy as a zoo after the teacher announced the holiday party.



8. As cold as ice


Meaning: Extremely cold in temperature, or showing no emotion.

Example: The wind was as cold as ice, cutting through our jackets.



9. As poor as a church mouse


Meaning: Very poor.

Example: In his younger days, he was as poor as a church mouse but worked hard to succeed.



10. As fat as a pig


Meaning: Very fat.

Example: The cat grew as fat as a pig after eating too many treats.
