PSLE Oral Practice – How to Prepare Your Child for the Stimulus-Based Conversation Component using Mock Oral topics and other tips.

Is your child struggling with the PSLE Oral Stimulus-Based Conversation (SBC)? You’re not alone. Many parents tell us they don’t know how to help their child sound confident and well-informed. At The Write Tribe, we’ve put together PSLE Oral Practice Worksheets, Mock Oral Sessions, and even a cheatsheet to make things simpler—for both students and parents.
PSLE oral practice worksheets / mock oral: How Can You Prepare at Home?
One of the most effective ways to help your child build confidence in Oral is to start casual conversations about current events in Singapore. Watch videos together, read articles side by side, and most importantly—talk.
Ask your child what they think. Encourage opinions. Don’t worry about being too formal—just keep the conversation flowing.
Here are some excellent local resources to explore together:
CNA Insider – Real-life stories and social issues
The Straits Times – Especially the IN and Little Red Dot student sections
Talking Point (Channel 5) – Great for discussion-based and debate-style topics
Many of these resources are available on Youtube and the internet.
🎯 Tip: Throw questions at them randomly while chatting! This builds their ability to think on their feet and respond naturally.
Sample Question Types and How to Answer Them
1. "What do you see in this picture?"
🗝 Describe the scene using relevant oral keywords tied to the theme.
This is one of the most commonly asked questions in Stimulus-Based Conversation. Students must observe the picture carefully and describe what is happening, using precise vocabulary.
Encourage your child to notice small but important details:
What are the people doing, wearing, or holding?
What are their facial expressions or gestures?
What is the setting—a school, community centre, food court?
If the image is about a recycling campaign, for instance, students can incorporate theme-specific keywords like:👉 reuse, reduce, recycle, upcycle, environment, sustainability, eco-friendly
Using such oral keywords helps students sound knowledgeable, confident, and topic-aware.
✅ We’ve compiled a wide range of theme-specific keywords in our PSLE Oral Stimulus-Based Conversation Cheatsheet to help your child answer like a pro.
2. “Do you think schools / the community should…?”
These are opinion-based questions that test maturity and reasoning.
💡 Encourage your child to reference local articles or even books to show awareness.
“I read in The Straits Times that food waste in Singapore is rising…”
“In a recent Talking Point episode, I learned…”
This also trains them to weave in relevant oral keywords that demonstrate depth and knowledge.
3. “Have you ever…?” / “What does your family do to…?”
These are personal recount questions. Students should tap into real or imagined experiences.
It’s okay to make things up—as long as the answer is logical and detailed.
“Once, my school held a donation drive where I helped pack canned food for needy families…”
Even in personal recounts, adding oral keywords can elevate the response. For example:
> "It felt meaningful to contribute to the community and promote inclusivity."

📌 Teach Structure with PEEL
At The Write Tribe, we teach students to answer using the PEEL structure:
Point
Explain
Evidence / Example
Link back to the question
This structure gives your child a clear map to follow and signals to the examiner when they’ve finished answering.
Bonus Tip: Add Opinions and Suggestions
Trained students don’t just answer questions—they think critically.
🗣 “In my opinion, more schools should have recycling competitions.”
💡 “I would suggest placing more donation booths in MRT stations, so people can contribute easily.”
